Lazaro P. Fields is a trial lawyer who represents businesses and individuals involved in government investigations, criminal litigation, and civil actions. Lazaro’s practice is focused on obtaining favorable results in matters arising from violations of state and federal laws, including fraud and the False Claims Act (FCA). A former federal prosecutor, he has successfully tried numerous cases to verdict and defended his prosecutions before the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
Lazaro previously served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, where he prosecuted cases involving money laundering, corrupt public officials, fraud, violent crime, drug trafficking, and matters involving the National Security Division. Committed to vindicating the rights of victims, Lazaro was recognized by the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General for his successful prosecutions of correctional officers for sexually abusing inmates. Lazaro’s cases have been featured in national and international media outlets, including Fox News, The New York Times, the New York Post, and The Washington Post.
Prior to his service with the Department of Justice, Lazaro litigated at a boutique firm in Coral Gables, Florida, where he represented Cuban families in the first-ever cases filed under the LIBERTAD Act of 1996. He was also a member of the team that obtained a dismissal of an indictment brought against a public official for alleged violations of the Sunshine Law, and also assisted in the representation of a Latin American politician charged in a high-profile money laundering prosecution.
Lazaro’s public service includes stints in all three branches of government. Following law school, Lazaro served as a law clerk to U.S. District Judge Federico A. Moreno of the Southern District of Florida. Prior to that, Lazaro was appointed by then-Governor Rick Scott to Class XI of the Florida Gubernatorial Fellows and worked for the Florida House of Representatives.
In 2020, Lazaro was appointed by the Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives to the Citizens Property Insurance Corporation Board of Governors, where he oversaw Florida’s multibillion-dollar property insurer of last resort. Lazaro is a member of the Belen Jesuit Alumni Association, the Federalist Society, and has served on the Florida State University College of Law Alumni Association Board of Directors.
